The Vienna Stephansplatz is both the urban as well as the geographical center of the Austrian federal capital . Within the first district (Innere Stadt) and at the same time the historic city center , the square is located north (Franz-Josefs-Kai / Donaukanal) and east (Stubenring) off-center. In the middle of the square is the central element of St. Stephen's Cathedral.
